Elodea Lab

Purpose: To find out how the Elodea cell looks like and study it under magnification and compare it to different cell parts under a microscope.

Hypothesis: If I use a microscope, then I will see the Elodea cell and its cell parts including the Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell Membrane, Chloroplasts, and Cell Wall.

If I use a microscope to magnify the Elodea cell, then I can compare the cell parts to other cell parts I have already observed.

Materials: Elodea (aquarium plant)

Compound Microscope

Microscope Slide


Cover Slip



Procedures: 1. Remove a small piece of leaf from an elodea plant and place it on a slide.

2. Then, drop a droplet of water onto the leaf.

3. After that, place a clean cover slip on top of the slide.

4. If there are any air bubbles trapped around the “e”, tap it with the end of a pencil or your fingernail until they move to the side and are released.

5. Now, put the slide onto the microscope stage and put it so that the light is shining on it and over the center of the stage opening.

6. Afterwards, look at the leaf and draw a picture of it under low power magnification. (Observation A)

7. Next, put the stage clips on to fasten it securely.

8. Look through the eyepiece and focus the leaf into view.

9. Draw the leaf as you see it under high-power magnification. (Observation B)

10. Label the Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell Membrane, Cell Wall, and Chloroplasts on your high power observation.

Conclusions: This lab was a very interesting fascinating one. I learned what plant cells look like and how they differ from animal cells. There are many differences including that the plant cell is more grouped together and connected than the animal cell and that there is a cell wall in plant cells. I also learned how to tell apart the different parts of a cell from each other. Using the microscope, I did see the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, chloroplasts, and cell wall. Since there are chloroplasts and a cell wall, we can conclude that the Elodea Cell is a plant cell and functions differently than a Cheek Cell, which is an animal cell.

Answers to Questions:

Q #1: Why did we not use iodine to stain this cell?

A: We did not use iodine to stain this cell because the Elodea Cell already has color to it and you can tell the difference between the cell and the air bubbles. Also, the Cheek Cell, in which we added iodine stain to was too little and had no color to it so we couldn’t determine where the cell was.

Q #2: What are two differences between a Cheek Cell and an Elodea Cell?

A: The Elodea cell has a chloroplast and a cell wall while the Cheek Cell doesn’t have any of them because it isn’t a plant cell.
