How much damage could Hurricane Isabel cause

How much damage could Hurricane Isabel cause

September 20, 2003, Period 3  Current Events

Problem/Objective: How much damage could Hurricane Isabel cause? How much money will it cost to repair the damages?

Early/Pre-observations: –This involves the whole east coast

-The hurricane is extremely large and powerful

-The hurricane will weaken slightly as it moves up north

Questions: –Where will the hurricane mainly be hitting?

-How can Americans prepare for this storm?

-What are the forecasts on the storm?

Hypothesis: The entire east coast from South Carolina to New Jersey will be experiencing extreme winds up to 130 miles per hour. Millions of people will be affected and major damages will occur, costing millions more to repair.

Experiment: Computer models showed that weather conditions should prevent Isabel from missing land, and that it is a powerful hurricane with Category 4 (131-155 mph) winds which could slam into the mid-Atlantic Coast. Experts say that its unusual for hurricanes to maintain its strength when moving into colder waters.

Data Collected: The storm centered about 820 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. and about 525 miles east of Nassau in the Bahamas. Winds are at least seventy-four mph extended 115 miles out from the center. The hurricane is moving west-northwest at about 10 mph. East Coast residents are preparing for the worst. They are buying plywood, two-by-fours, and enough screws to barricade their homes. Dangerous surf are forecasted for the southeastern United States for the next several days. The Atlantic hurricane season began June 1 and ends November 30. The last two Category 5 hurricanes to strike the US were Andrew in 1992 and Camille in 1969.

Conclusion: Since the Hurricane Isabel is affecting the East Coast, it is best to prepare for the worst and have emergency materials ready. It is a safe thing to board up windows because they could shatter. Also, buy the necessary materials to protect yourself including plywood, screws, propane gas, and food. Also, it is pleasant to have a household generator ready.
