Protist Lab

Protist Lab

Purpose: To find out what protists look like under magnification.

Hypothesis: If I use the microscope to magnify the protist slides, then I will be able to see what various protists look like under close observation.

Materials: Compound Microscope

Amoeba Slide

Paramecium Slide

Euglena Slide

Bacteria Slide

Procedures: 1. Place the amoeba slide on the stage of the microscope.

2. Then, adjust the slide so that it is focused under low power objective.

3. After that, place switch object to medium power and then to high power.

4. Draw and label the high power observation.

5. Repeat the steps for the paramecium slide, euglena slide, and bacteria slide.

Observations: Here are my observations for the Protists I saw under high power observation:

Conclusions: This lab was very cool. I really liked how we could see what protist look like under a microscope. I learned what the amoeba looks like, what the paramecium looks like, what the euglena looks like, and what the bacteria looks like. They all have different parts, which make them individual and different from each other. I also learned how plants and animal protists differ from each other. The main visible reason is that plants have chloroplasts. Using the microscope to magnify the protist slides, I was able to see what various protists look like under close observation. Since euglena have chloroplasts, then we can conclude that they are plants and function differently than the amoeba, which is an animal cell.
